Around 1800, when the city walls were pulled down, they were replaced by a garden strip. This green ribbon now has become one of the most favourite spots of town. Beneath the trees, on glittering ponds both inhabitants and visitors take time out from the bustle of the strees.

North of the city center, parts of the city wall were preserved.
The Barbacane, constructed in the year 1499, is a a fortification in late gothic style featuring thick walls, sharp towers and spires and 130 slits to fire at will.

The Florianska is one of the main entrances to the town. From here, the newly crowned kings made their way acorss the center to the Rynek and through the the city center to their residence at >> Wawel.
