Krakow in a nutshell

In just twenty minutes you might be able to cross the city center that is a compact architectural ensemble. The medieval city wall was torn down around 1800 and replaced by the "Planty" garden strip. Except for that, all of old Krakow has been preserved. The city is sometimes referred to as the "Florence of Poland". Most of the buildings stem from the 13th century, all lined up around Rynek Glowny which is the central market place. Except for Saint Mark's square in Venice, this is the largest medieval town square in Europe.

Southwest of the city lies the Wawel. This castle was residence of the Polish kings for centuires. The river Weichsel flows in a bow beneath the steep hill the Wawel was built upon and then passes by the old city on its way through Poland to the baltic sea in the north.

City maps and any other kind of touristic information is available at the "Informacja Turystyczna" across the railway station which is only some hundred meters off the city center.
