The Sukiennice - The Cloth Hall

The Sukiennice stretches out like a long carpet deviding the market square Rynek Glowny into two halves. After Krakow had received the "right to market" in the 13th century, merchandising started in tents and booths wich soon received roofs and walls. After a fire devasted this part of town in the 16th century Italian architects and artisans built the Sukkienice in the style of the Italian Renaissance.

Arcades of the Tuchhallen

Under its vaults, you will still find some oriental basar where souvenirs are being sold.
The "Maskarones" is a relief embedded in the walls featuring grotesque masques carved out in the stones.

Fixed to some other wall hangs a large knife. By this knife, thieves lost their ears - a cruel and medieval way of punishment.
