Charlottenburg:
around Savignyplatz

The Gedächtniskirche is, aside from the Brandenburger Tor, the definitive symbol for Berlin. The Kurfürstendamm, Ku'damm for short, has also achieved a similar degree of fame. This broad, urban boulevard starts at the Gedächtniskirche extending westwards. Along its sidewalks you'll see Berliners shopping and curious tourists side by side.

The typical Berlin tour begins and ends at the Gedächtniskirche at Breitscheidplatz. The church was bombed during WW II and not rebuilt. Just a few steps away is "Kaufhaus des Westens", or KaDeWe, a large department store. At the time of the GDR, it was considered a symbol of western capitalism. Although this area is so dominated by mass consumption and tourism, there are still interesting things to discover here. Around Savignyplatz there are many chic, still moderately-priced cafés, bars, restaurants and boutiques. Many consider Berlin not to be very elegant, but here these prejudices are unjustified.

Also worth making a detour for is the Viktoria-Luise-Platz and Ludwig-Kirch-Platz located south of the Ku'damm. Peaceful places with water fountains, perfect for relaxing outside on a bench or in on of the nearby cafés and reading the newspaper - something those proletarians living in that new built "Hinterhof" nearby never had time to...
